Accessibility

Garden Apartment Arabesque has been designed and built specifically with the wheelchair user in mind. It is the only property in Dahab designed to meet all European guidelines on accessibility for manual and electric wheelchairs.

Particular care was taken to widen doors and hallways to maximise turning space, the kitchen surfaces have been lowered, a breakfast bar and hanging kitchen sink allow full knee clearance.  In the kitchen there are pull-out drawers and corner units for easy access and a small dishwasher and electric hob and microwave/grill oven to aid in preparing meals.

The wheel in wet-room style bathroom has plenty of space for manoeuvrability, handrails in the shower and next to the toilet for assistance if needed. The bathroom sink allows full knee clearance.  If required we have imported a European front opening shower chair which is available for rent.

The air-conditioned bedroom has two single beds with plenty of space for transferring from a wheelchair. The two single beds can arranged as a king size bed if requested. In the lounge a futon-style sofa bed offers additional sleeping options for other family members or a carer.

The whole of the ground floor of Residence Arabesque is level access, fully tiled inside and out with gardens raised to eye level of those seated in a wheelchair.  The Residence has been designed so that the larger Villa Arabesque and Garden Apartment Arabesque can be opened up to accommodate one large group of friends or family (sleeping 11 persons). The wheelchair user is then able to fully access all areas of the garden and ground floor of the villa.

Egypt is not particularly wheelchair friendly, the concept of disabled accessible toilets and low profile ramps has not yet to be grasped but what Egypt lacks in easy access it makes up for in attitude. If you are unable to access a restaurant or shop usually without asking a couple of young Egyptian men will appear and offer to lift your wheelchair into the restaurant and a shop keeper will rush out to the street with the items that you request.

Bumpy uneven roads make it quite difficult for the solo manual wheelchair user to get around but with a little assistance almost all of Dahab is accessible.  Residence Arabesque is located 300m away from the boulevard which is a level pathway running parallel to the sea for a distance of approximately 3km linking all the local beaches, restaurants, bars and shops.

We are able to arrange scuba diving and snorkelling specifically for those with limited mobility.  Working closely with a local dive centre that has many years experience in assisting those that need a little more help in the water, we are happy to offer fully inclusive scuba diving holidays!
